"A feeling of history and beauty"
We found it very difficult to leave Calcione after a two week stay in early July 2006. It is in a peaceful, beautiful setting. We stayed in a two bedroomed apartment, Alloro, which had lots of space for all of us (family of 4). It has a large terrace with spectacular views, where we spent a lot of our time - reading, sunbathing and enjoying delicious local produce - both food and wines. Both the accomodation and estate were full of character
This is not pristine, modern accomodation and is not "twee" tuscany. The dominating characteristics are a feeling of history and the beauty and peaceful setting which surrounds you. The small lake is particularly beautiful and we also frequented the excellent estate swimming pool.
The services we received were excellent - babysitting for our two young children (some afternoons and evenings by a friendly and experienced english speaking young woman), cleaning services twice a week and an initial shopping so that we had basics for our arrival. The location is also very convenient for seeing much of Tuscany and Umbria, with a beautiful and friendly town of Lucignano nearby. Lucignano is excellent for restaurants, sourcing groceries and to sit back in one of the bars and enjoy watching the local life. It also has a beautiful setting and although quiet during the day, is nicely lively in the evening.
Really, the only problem we had was that it was such a wonderful and relaxing place to spend time, we didn't get to tour half as much as we expected. We are already looking forward to our next visit!!
