"Calcione was one of the best vacations we have ever had!"
 Dear Olivella,
even though it is nearly three months since our stay at La Pergola, the memories remain very vivid. As a family of five, including 3 teenage boys, it's not always easy to find the right formula but we can say without exaggeration that Calcione was one of the best vacations we have ever had! The absence of television is a boon and we all plunged into our books and revived the art of conversation over long meals seated under the Pergola. The sense of welcome and relaxation were instantaneous, and the house itself a joy.
In spite of the blisteringly hot weather, we remained cool thanks to the thick stone walls and those beautiful vaulted brick ceilings which I have never witnessed before. It was a particularly poignant time for us as our eldest Nicholas was preparing to fly the nest to university, where he now is, and so we were also savouring our last few weeks together. Everything has been worked out to the last detail and the copious information provided made it easy for us to choose good restaurants and places to visit. Apart from the food, wine, oil, Tuscan scenery, Florence, Sienna and Martino's daily chats, a particular highlight for me was being able to go riding with Spinella on Kinka, her beautiful chestnut ex-racehorse whose pin-up picture I am looking at as I write. What a horse and what a beautiful way to see the countryside. We cannot recommend Calcione more highly and if anyone would like further feedback, please feel free use us as a reference.
