Casa del Castagno
"The views are to die for"
The description of Casa del Castagno does not do it justice, once through the gates you enter a world of peace and tranquility that looks like it has remained unchanged for hundreds of years. Read MoreI found out whilst I was there that Casa del Castagno is one of a number of houses that were built for estate workers in the 16th century and it has been meticulously preserved by the family that own the estate (incidentally who have owned it for more than 500 hundred years). The house is beautifully furnished and comfortable and the views are to die for - especially from the bedrooms. We were two families with four adults and five children and everything fitted for us perfectly - bedroom layout, bathrooms, lounge and dining seating etc. The pool was fantastic - a really good size with excellent views - we loved it so much it was difficult to drag ourselves away - but the area was also very beautiful and it was easy to get to many wonderful towns for lunch and a look around. We also hired the cook for two evenings - what an experience - a really interesting and animated person who created Italian food like you've never eaten before, a great experience. In summary we had a wonderful time, it exceeded our expectations of what a holiday in Tuscany would be like and we will be definitely going back.

"The setting is stunning"
My family, including my two four year old granddaughters, had an absolutely wonderful time at Casa del Castagno.Read More
The accommodations could not have been better, we did not want for anything. The staff could not have been more helpful. The setting is stunning, even the two little girls realized what a special place Il Calcione is. They want to know if we can go back next year. Well see. You can certainly list me as a reference or post my comments.

Casa del Castagno
"A week that we won't forget"
I cannot say enough about the quality of the place, the layout and the grounds. They were just right for our family. Read MoreThe fact that we had the whole place to ourselves was key to the success of our stay.
We kept the gates closed so the little ones could run around and we did not have to worry about their safety. The weather was kind to us in that we did not have the humidity or heat that we were warned about. Even the little rain we had did not deter us from having a good time. It was also a blessing to have at least two washing machines although the one in our apartment was very small. Two nights we had a local woman (I am ashamed that I cannot remember her name) and her husband cook for us. They brought all the food, prepared it and served it as well as cleaned up everything. The fun came when we had to pay them. Since we did not speak Italian and they did not speak English, it was very comical. But I think we were very generous. I hope so because they were very good.
One night, we had a local cooking school chef come in with the ingredients and with her entourage and she conducted a cooking class in the kitchen of the larger unit (homemade pasta, ravioli, sauce, etc.) and they served us as well. The best raviolis I have had in years. The rest of the nights, each couple bought food and cooked it so everyone shared in the preparation of our dinners.
We fit perfectly around the large dining room table and that was our social meeting place each night with dinner and games afterward. One very special night, we actually got to eat at the outside table as the weather stayed warm that evening. Most nights, however, we were able to close our windows and use all our blankets.
We had a birthday celebration one evening with 3 local musicians who provided us with the Tuscan music at the pool which we had decorated with candles. It was a beautiful romantic night. Every morning, each couple would take off after breakfast and go off exploring the local towns. Everyone would meet at the pool about 3pm and cocktail hour began at about 4:30. It was a week that we won't forget and it will be hard to match that anywhere else. Yes, I would be glad to be listed as a reference for future guests. Thank you so much,

"The dinners were nothing short of extraordinary"
I just wanted to thank you for your hospitality during our stay at Calcione. Read MoreCasa del Castagno
could not have been better for our family vacation. We particularly enjoyed the rural Tuscan setting with the views and ancient architecture. The dinners prepared by Amel were nothing short of extraordinary. The location enabled us to explore Montepulciano, Siena, Monteriggioni, San Gimignano and Florence with ease. The tour of the castle was an unexpected treat along with the olive oil and wine from the estate. We hope to make another trip sometime in the future and would welcome the opportunity to visit Calcione once again.

"I really miss Tuscany!"
When we first arrived at Calcione we were stunned by the view. We had driven through Tuscany all day, sightseeing, until our arrival. The view here was just as breathtaking!Read More
The house is situated high on a hill, in the midst of a 1600 acre olive grove/vineyard/farm. On either side and the back of the house was true Tuscan farm country. Across the valley to the front - a sweeping vista where we could see the ancient walled village of Lucignano. We immediately took off hiking, poking about the grounds, exploring. Later that evening, after our group scrounged up dinner and enjoyed great food and wine in the large dining room, we went outside and watched the moon and the stars - and listened to the wild boars rooting around. During our stay, we were treated to several meals by your recommended cook, Amel - what a great learning experience, and a lot of fun! She fed us well - even bringing vegetables and herbs from her own garden. You also did us a great favor recommending ValdiChiana-Tours. Giorgio and Claudio planned a wonderful two days of wine tours. Chianti was beautiful and we had a wonderful picnic in between winery tours. We also went the other direction another day and visited the Brunello region - different but just as beautiful, with wonderful wines as well. It was great having our own personal tour guide who came to pick us up and drop us off for these tours.
We are settled back at home after two weeks, and I have to say I really miss Tuscany! The food and the old buildings and the wine. Back here at home, I struggle to find anything that looks nearly as enticing in our local markets. I even went to a popular Italian market in St. Paul looking for some of the wonderful Italian groceries - no luck...

"The Italians have got it right"
I can say only excellent things about the location of the house.
Read MoreWe had no trouble cooking, because we had two accomplished cooks; me and Arthur Domike.
As I said to my sister in Australia on the phone last night, "the Italians have got it right." The beautiful scenery, the history and the unbelievable art, the food, and ancient towns boggled my mind. I mean when I saw the Leaning Tower in Pisa, followed by an exquisite seafood lunch, I thought I'd gone to heaven. And I speak as a person who has been around the world in a plane and lived for years outside the U.S.
I certainly would love to give the Casa a recommendation, and the wonderful help you and your family gave us. Cheers!

"It was pure magic"
Dear Olivella,
Sorry it took me so long to write; we've all had to readjust to the "real world" after our wonderful visit to Tuscany. Read MoreWe rented Casa del Castagno with a group totalling 10 friends, from the US, France & Ireland. While getting everyone to commit to a time was a challenge, once we arrived it was pure magic. Some of us took the two weeks to travel the Tuscan countryside seeking out art in small towns, some of us relaxed by the pool reading and writing, but all of us came home in the evenings to long nights of talking, drinking local wine and enjoying the warm balmy air of Calcione. Three of the group were dedicated cyclists, and biked every day to Monte San Savino for cappuccino and pastries at Caffe della Luna, while the rest of us drove in. It became our favorite place to enjoy breakfast on our way to or from a local market. I would recommend this trip to any groups of friends that wants some time to visit together, and a big house where there is enough space for everyone, yet plenty of "living space" for group meals, conversations, and music! Oh, and did I mention that two of our friends, previously unknown to each other, fell in love and are planning to marry? What better endorsement of the magic of Calcione can there be?

"We loved Tuscany"
We had a wonderful time in Italy in April. The directions to the property got us there without problems. Read MoreWhen we arrived the house (Castagno) was just as I had hoped, very spacious, clean and comfortable for our group of 7. The weather in April was wonderful and we were able to spend a lot of time outside in the yard enjoying the private country setting. Unfortunately it was too early for the pool to be opened up. Every morning we took long walks often to the next village, we had several runners in our group and they were delighted with the beautiful scenery and the absence of cars on the country roads. In the afternoons we went to various villages and often brought wine and food home for our evening meal. We found the cooking facilities adequate and the dining room was perfect. We had dinner at home every night and one evening enjoyed a wonderful Tuscan meal prepared by your cook. We loved Tuscany and plan to return. We found the location of the house to be ideal for day trips. You may certainly use me as a reference and share my email address.

"Truly a memorable adventure"
Dear Olivella, I cannot tell you how embarrassed I am that it has taken this long to write this letter. Read MoreI just wanted to thank you for a very wonderful stay at Il Calcione. This was truly a memorable adventure for us, and your hospitality made it even better. The accommodations were perfect for both the adults and the girls. It was very kind of the game warden and his wife to let the children visit their home and see the animals, especially Atilla. They really enjoyed that. Each of our day trips to the Tuscan towns and villages was a treat, and with time we began to think of Lucignano as "our little town". An unexpected surprise for us was the city of Lucca. We had no expectations when we went, and what a treat it was; I hope we can return there one day. Please express our gratitude to your parents. It was very kind of them to have us over for a visit that evening. They were both very engaging. Their home is beautiful, and the tour of the Chapel was a special time for each of us. You and your mother were most helpful with the car with the "porcupine problem". The mechanic in Sinalunga was a great idea, and his handy work allowed us to get back to Florence without a problem. Grazie! I do hope that one day we can return to Il Calcione for another visit. Your patience and hospitality made our trip to Italy a truly wonderful vacation. In addition to the above, I would tell prospective renters that Calcione's location is ideal. Although it is close to larger cities like Siena, Florence, etc., its nearness to (our preference) wonderful smaller towns, like Lucignano, Monte San Savino, Sinalunga, Cortona, Montepulciano, Pienza, Montalcino, made it ideal. We enjoyed the market in Lucignano for immediate shopping needs, but Sinalunga (a bit further) provided the hefty Supermercato for more involved food requirements.
Calcione's accommodations were perfect for 2 families and children: it allowed plenty of privacy as well as sufficient common area. The pool, al fresco dining, and surrounding countryside gave us a much needed respite from being tourists. The view from the upstairs bedroom looking toward Lucingano could easily compete with any that Traveler magazine features in their "Room with a View". And finally, having access to Olivella as a personal concierge rivaled any high end hotel. We have rented 2 other villas in France and found Il Calcione to be our best experience thus far. Feel free to use our email address for further inquiries.

"Nothing can compare to our stay and hiking in Tuscany"
We have been hiking in Europe for 12 years, Austrian Lakes, Black forest, Lake Lucern etc.... Read Morebut nothing can compare to our stay and hiking in Tuscany. We visited the wonderful medieval Cities surrounding the beautiful villa that we rented from you. We always go as a group of 6 (ladies only) and we were completely comfortable with our arrangement at the villa. The best part was every afternoon or early evening we returned home, having bought fresh fruit and vegetables, cheese and meats and after fixing our dinner eating under the beautiful chestnut tree - it was bliss. The wonderful Chianti from the region helped our great active vacation. We hope to do again soon.

Casa del Castagno
"A wonderful vacation"
Thank you so much for sharing Il Calcione with us. It was a wonderful vacation and definitely Read Morethe best part of our eight weeks away from home. When we spoke on our last day, you mentioned that you would be interested in our listing highlights of our stay at Il Calcione and Tuscany: The guesthouses are what you would expect of 18th Century renovated peasants cottages: solid with amazingly thick walls and shuttered windows; full of atmosphere and absolutely rustic. The art works that decorate the walls in our house were particularly interesting because they not only represent some of the ancestral Della Stufas but there are also prints of old Toscana which suit the antiquity of the house. The houses we saw are well and appropriately appointed for the tariff range. We found our accommodation which was in the moderate range very good and as we expected. We had everything we needed including a fireplace. Our house had well laden walnut trees and a pine-nut tree in the grounds, and the surrounding property and especially neighbouring areas had many patches of field mushrooms which provided us with breakfast and garnishings! A forager's delight! I just know there were the delicious and highly prized porcine mushrooms about but we didn't know what to look for and where. The guests' tennis court is excellent as are the swimming pools we saw. Perhaps because it was autumn, there was a surprising lack of nasty insects: no mosquitos to speak of, hardly any flies and the European wasps were also quite inconspicuous. Beautiful little lizards played along the stone walls. We saw pheasant, hare and deer quite commonly around the estate and some of our party claimed to have heard wild boar. There is a surprising lack of birds and the few we saw were extremely timid. Il Calcione's four horses are very friendly and love to be hand fed walnuts. From the castle we obtained very good quality and cheap wines, excellent honey and olive oil. We also arranged for a cook to come once a week - a Tunisian woman called Amel who is a wonderful cook and very reasonable. Among her many specialties: wild boar pasta, torte della nonna, the best tiramisu we have tasted, and some great Tunisian dishes. Nicoletta della Stufa who was mostly on call at the castle while we were there is most accommodating and helpful with general and local tourist advice. The most startling surprise about Il Calcione was that it is set among not only farmed land (olive groves and grapevines) but extensive woodland. It is the most perfect setting for nature lovers who like to ramble along little used tracks with very little chance of running into other ramblers. Much of it is quite wild country as we experienced travelling back from Rapolano Terme. We turned off the gravel road onto a track to the left just before the road joins the sealed road again - drove as far as we could, then walked to the top of a hill where we had a view across extensive woodland to the distant castle. Near the residences are two lakes: one is dark and mysterious and the other is much larger, bare and visually less interesting.
Il Calcione is ideally suited for easy trips to the most beautiful country in southern Tuscany, including the Chianti region and to the most famous and extraordinary towns and cities, such as: Florence, Sienna, Montepulciano, Pienza, San Gimignano and further afield to Orvieto and Cortona and Lake Trasimene and other Umbrian tourist sites. Because there is so much to see and do in these places and on the way, we found it necessary to limit ourselves to one destination a day even though that might be only 50 to 70 kms away. Also the minor roads are very narrow and twisting and often only dirt tracks. For this reason it is also important to get hold of a detailed map (1:250,000 is ideal) which shows the scenic roads clearly marked and places of major interest well highlighted. One of our party had such a map which prompted us to take a selection of 'green' roads to wherever we were going which without fail would present us with unforgettable views and scenery - a photographer's paradise.
The siting of Il Calcione is excellent for another reason - access to major tourist cities. Tourists may be wonderful for the local economy but they are a curse for other tourists. We found it so difficult to get a park in Siena (in late September) that we decided to catch trains to such places in future because we noticed that railway stations were located close to city centers. Arezzo, about 30 mins easy drive from Il Calcione is where you catch express trains to almost any major destination. Opposite the station's rear (on the way in from Il Calcione) is a very good and cheap parking station. Best of all the trains are remarkably cheap, faster than a car and very reliable. You can get to Florence in an hour, Rome in an hour and a half and to Venice and Bologna in about two. It is important to pay the extra for reserved seating, however, if you want to be sure of a seat.
The local towns are well serviced with supermarkets, restaurants and anything else you need. There is an excellent range of good quality and reasonably priced local food and wine in the COOPs (supermarkets) located in most towns; we frequented the COOPS at Sinalunga and Monte San Savino. Spirits are very cheap. Most local towns also have a weekly market day where you can purchase fresh meats, vegetables and fruit and fish. Rapolano Terme had a small COOP, and was the most convenient for Internet services at the time we were there. Finally the people. Helpful, friendly, very patient and so good humoured. We always felt very safe in Italian towns and cities, no matter what the hour.

“We loved il Calcione”

It was a pleasure to see the horses in the pasture every morning and look for the pheasants. We drove to Lucignano most every day and truly enjoyed the cafes at the edge of town. Lucignano is my favorite hill town. The old stone buildings are absolutely beautiful with flowers in front of every residence. It is not very touristy, which we especially appreciated. It was very kind of your mother to take us on a tour of the castle and the garden as we had requested. Please give her our regards. We truly appreciated the CD player you lent us: soft music was the perfect complement to delicious meals prepared in the comfort of our own apartment. Our children also had a wonderful time watching the horses, swimming in the pool and collecting pine cones while playing on the large grounds. The views from all sides of the house are breathtaking. We were awed by the beauty of the incoming thunderstorm which we watched from the large terrace on the only day we spent lazily around the house and pool. We were greeted by a former Canadian Ambassador to Italy in the small supermarket in Lucignano. “Refinement, quietness”
We spent lovely vacations at Il Calcione. First of course the apartments, not really flats, are much larger than what is generally on offer. Read MoreWe felt more like we were staying in the back garden of Tuscan cousins rather than renting some vacation accommodation.
The swimming pool and a lake allow everyone to enjoy either company or privacy. Tastefully furnished, too. But then of course with artists in the della Stufa family...
Then, Il Calcione is a great base station from which to discover Tuscany and Umbria. Most of the most interesting places are on the doorstep: Montepulciano, Arezzo, the lake of Trasimeno, Perugia, Siena, Florence, Pienza, Asciano, are all less than an hour away, while Lucca, Pisa and San Gimignano are still within easy reach.
And then there is Tuscany itself... Refinement, quietness, the vibrant presence of all its artists, past and current, small towns and rolling (or steep) hills. At first, we wondered how so many people had had the means to build so many beautiful villas in such a small, privileged, area. Then we realized that some were only ordinary farms and public buildings which shared an aesthetic concern rarely seen in other countries. And the Tuscans have always been wise enough to keep those lovely buildings alive, while more narcissistic cultures were more prone to destroying and rebuilding. As always in hilly country, there is also the magic of a different landscape behind every bend, beyond every hill top. For those of you who feel fit, bring along your walking shoes and bicycles. The walks and rides are fantastic, if sometimes energetic. And Tuscan food and wine taste so good, anything that stimulates your appetite or is a good excuse for self-indulgence is welcome.

Casa del Lecci
“I have never been so relaxed”
Dear Olivella,
We meant to write to you after our stay at Casa dei Lecci in July, but laziness got in the way! Read MoreI’m very glad you contacted us because the memories of a superb holiday are as vivid now as the day we returned. Put simply, this was the best self catering accommodation we have ever stayed in. The photos on the website don’t do it justice. It is much roomier than it appears and extremely well appointed. The directions are first class – we arrived without a hitch. Nico met us and we were straight in – no tedious check in routine – and it was the same at the end of the week – very simple and straightforward and on our way in 5 minutes. The view from the sun terrace is quite simply breathtaking and we spent a lot of time just relaxing there. The swimming pools are clean, well maintained and uncrowded. Lucignano (a 10 minute drive) has everything you need – enough restaurants, a small but well stocked supermarket, a chemist and several interesting little gift shops.
If you’re arriving late, best to bring some basic supplies with you – toilet paper, washing up liquid etc, maybe some salt & pepper. There is an extremely informative folder covering all sorts of useful information – READ IT. We didn’t and ended up catching the slowest train back from Firenze. The pamphlet explained how to avoid this!
Really, I cannot speak highly enough of the whole operation and would be glad to talk to anyone who is considering choosing Calcione. You will not be disappointed. Roddy Nicholson & Carol O’Connor

“One of the most welcoming places we have every stayed”
We stayed at Casa dei Lecci in September. Il Calcione is a short drive from Arezzo where we arrived by train from Rome and rented a car. Read MoreIt was without a doubt one of the most welcoming places we have every stayed. We researched lots of properties on line before deciding on Il Calcione. From the moment we entered the apartment we felt at home. All the rooms were beautifully decorated and some had antiques mixed with modern pieces. We had more than enough space for the two of us. We really loved the fact that the ceilings were extra high and had beautiful wooden beams. All the rooms were bright with great views. We loved the outside terrace where we would enjoy our morning coffee or our evening glass of wine. There was a wood burning fireplace in the living room that we had the opportunity to use. The kitchen was modern and fully stocked with the necessary items to cook meals. Our bedroom was very spacious and we had the best sleeps ever because it was so quiet at night. The bedroom had an ensuite bathroom with a good-sized shower. In addition to the bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living room, we also had a very nice foyer and a laundry room. Having laundry facilities was fabulous and so we were able to either hang our laundry inside in the laundry room or outside on the terrace.
The castle is so central that we were able to make many day trips. Some of the places we visited were: Assisi, Siena, Cortona, Orvieto, San Gimignano and Montepulciano. We also went to San Lucignano quite often because it was only a 10 minute drive from the castle. We bought groceries there and had lovely meals in this quaint town.
This vacation was truly exceptional because we got to experience peace and tranquility. We did not miss not having a phone, TV, radio or newspaper. We were able to truly relax. We would go back in a heartbeat to this little piece of paradise.

“No where else but at Calcione”
I am pleased to have the opportunity to comment on Calcione. Upon our arrival we were warmly greeted by Olivella, who we found to be kind and very welcoming... like meeting an old friend. We stayed at Casa dei Lecci and the views from our private terrace were breath-taking! Read MoreThe apartment was clean and comfortable and we found everything homey. The grounds were gorgeous and kept well and provided great excursions. We took advantage of the home cooked Tuscan meal and may I just say..”YUM!” I can not bring to mind the name of the woman who prepared our feast but I would highly recommend this night of culinary pampering! While we were at Calcione, the World Cup was on... Italy was playing and we just did not want to miss it. Bernardo and Nicoletta (Olivella’s parents) took us in to their home and provided us with our own private room where we could watch. Both Bernardo and Nicoletta were welcoming and generous of their home and their private time. We were made to feel very at home and comfortable. The whole Tuscan experience was made easy and relaxing as loads of information on the area was provided in a handy book in our apartment. We took full advantage of all the information. The pool area was just lovely and a great refreshment from the day’s travels. Rejini and I do hope to come back many times in the future and would think of staying no where else but with Olivella at Calcione.
Sincere Regards

“This is Tuscany in all its glory!”
Having had the opportunity to send a month long vacation in Italy with my daughter was a fantasy come true, and Calcione was a large part of it! From the moment we arrived I fell in love with the picture perfect setting. This is Tuscany in all its glory! Read MoreOur accommodations at Casa dei Lecci were everything we had hoped they might be and more. We loved our afternoon swims in both the pool and lake, and evening sunsets on our patio while dining to Amel’s cooking. For day trips through the Tuscan countryside I can think of no better or more central location. When I think of Tuscany I will always think of Calcione! Can’t wait to return. “A wonderful week”
We thoroughly enjoyed our week at Casa dei Lecci. Throwing open the shutters each morning revealed misty valley shadows and the medieval silhouette of Lucignano in the distance. Read MoreBy afternoon the view across the valley was spectacular and the town glowed with golden light. We spent some of our time driving through the Tuscan countryside, the Chianti area and the Val di Chiana, but it was always nice to come home to our comfortable apartment amid the olive groves. Our terrace was a wonderful place to read or make journal entries inspired by the views and the beauty of Calcione’s setting. On chilly evenings we lit a fire in the fireplace and relaxed. A couple of tips for other guests: be sure to follow the path down to the small and very picturesque lake right on the Calcione property. We spent quite a while sitting on the dock enjoying the fine weather and watching the fish jump for bugs. The two bar/cafè’s near the entry gate in Lucignano have outdoor patios, which are fun for people-watching people, but our favorite place for morning caffè was One Caffè at via G. Matteotti 79, which had yummy jam-filled cornetti. The city of Arezzo is not as well known as some of the other Tuscan cities but it’s worth a trip to see the Piero della Francesca fresco cycle at the church of San Francesco and the beautiful stained glass windows by Guillaume de Marcillat in the Duomo. Olivella - We would be happy to have our comments posted and we would be happy to be a reference.
Thanks again for a wonderful week.

“Here you will relax”
Words cannot possibly describe the beauty and peace that are part of Il Calcione and its surroundings. Upon arrival our gracious hostess said “here you will relax”. This statement rang true throughout our stay at Il Calcione. Read MoreWe were fortunate enough to stay at two of the houses at Il Calcione - San Pietro and Fontegiannelli. Both houses reflect classic Tuscan architecture color and décor which was so much a part of our experience. The kitchens were beautifully equipped and made our evening dinners such a pleasure. In fact our dinners were so pleasurable that we never made it to a restaurant during the evening in spite of the fact we were in the close vicinity of many fine restaurants. We would dine on our exterior terrace, with vistas of the olive groves and of the picturesque town of Lucignano, whose lights would twinkle late into the long dusk. The air was especially good as it scented with the smell of spring, olives and vines. In addition we were able to ride mountain bikes on gravel roads surrounded by olives and vines, that lead to small stone clad towns. Our hostess, Olivella, was very helpful in directing us to all the beauty and history that surrounds Il Calcione, for you are situated so close to many historical towns such as Florence, Siena, Montepulciano and Pienza. Il Calcione was an inspiration and it’s memory will be with us forever.

“Our favorite part of our Italian vacation”
We had a wonderful time staying in Casa dei Lecci in late June. It was our favorite part of our Italian vacation. The apartment was larger than we expected. Read More The setting so naturalistic and picture-perfect, we breakfasted on our balcony/patio daily, with an incredible view. We slept well, it was nice and cool at night. Even with no screens, insects were not a problem. We loved the town of Lucignano. After visiting Siena and Cortona, which we had heard so much about, we were glad to get back to “our own town”. Smaller, more intimate, no crowds, not touristy at all. The people in Lucignano were very friendly, especially after we had been there a day or two. We went to market day, got to know the gelato guy very well, just seemed to blend right in. The church there rivaled the Duomo in Florence, (on a much smaller scale!), only as we opened the door, there was no one there, the hush and beauty was awe inspiring. Not many people spoke English, but we were able to communicate without problem, and picked up a bit of Italian along the way. We took the train from Rome, then rented a car in Arezzo. The driving wasn’t bad at all. You really must have a car when staying out. We toured vineyards, went horseback riding, relaxed and had a wonderful time. After leaving, we took the train to Florence, then Venice, then Rome. The entire trip was 2 weeks. So glad we spent a portion of it in one spot. You cannot miss the cities, all the incredible art and history (the David in Florence is worth the wait!), but the small towns were the most pleasant part of our trip. Our daughter was ready to stay, and is already planning a semester abroad. We’d be happy to be contacted by any potential guests. Hope to come again someday.

“Great central location for touring”
Hello Olivella,
Many thanks to you and your family for helping make our stay in Toscana fabulous. Sonja and I enjoyed Casa dei Lecci very much - it was very comfortable and great central location for touring the country side and towns and villages. Read More The quiet solitude of the country was a great place to come home to after our busy days visiting in the villages, churches and museums. Also the dinner with your cook Amel was fabulous - after a busy and rather wet day in Cortona it was great to come home and build a warm fire in the fireplace, and have a a delicious Tuscan dinner cooked for us. We also appreciated how helpful your mother was during our stay.

“Our dream come true!”
My wife and I just returned from our 3-week trip to Italy.... our dream come true! It was every bit as wonderful as we thought it would be, and we wish we could have stayed longer. Read MoreAlthough 21 days isn’t nearly enough time to see all that Italy has to offer, we did manage to hit some of the highlights. We covered Rome, the Amalfi Coast, Cinque Terre, Lake Como, Venice, and our favorite... the Tuscany/Umbria regions. It was there that we spent a week (our vacation within a vacation) at Casa dei Lecci on the grounds of Il Calcione. The place was absolutely gorgeous! It was roomy, comfortable, and rustic. It gave us the feeling that we were really part of the Italian culture. Casa dei Lecci was the perfect size for my wife and I, and it certainly provided the romantic atmosphere that allowed us to get reacquainted with each other... ample use was made of the fireplace for our quiet evenings together. Casa dei Lecci’s central location allowed us to take day trips to key places in the area since Assisi, Siena, Florence, Orvieto, Cortona, Montalcino, and Montepulciano were all within an hour’s drive. Our day started with breakfast on the huge outdoor terrace with a breathtaking view of the countryside. After we finished eating, we would head out for the destination of the day for some shopping, eating and sightseeing. Late afternoon would find us back home on the terrace enjoying the sunset with some local wine, cheese, bread, olives, and any other goodies purchased on the trip... and there are plenty of goodies to choose from! Evening would be spent in front of the fireplace for a while before retiring for the night to rest for the next day’s adventure. We have traveled quite a bit in our life, but I can tell you that it doesn’t get any better than this! Thank you so much for allowing us to spend some time at this small slice of Heaven on Earth. “Thank you for sharing your bit of paradise!”
Wayne and I enjoyed our time at Calcione very much. It truly was the highlight of our six week vacation. Casa del Lecci became our home for two weeks while we explored the Tuscan surroundings.
Read MoreWe thank your Mother for her warm welcome and you for your prompt replies when we were making inquiries and, ultimately, our booking. It was a pleasure to finally meet you! Wayne and I were impressed with your estate and hearing about some of its history. We enjoyed our walks to the lakes through the lovely trees and roadways. Our apartment was very comfortable and we appreciated the serenity. Each cloudless night we stood on the terrace marvelling at the Milky Way. Living in a big city one forgets how magnificent the night sky is!
We found Calcione such a wonderful location to explore Tuscany on day trips. Siena and Montepulciano were magnificent. Other jewels were Anghiari, Rapolano Terme, Arezzo, Montalcino and, of course, Florence. We found Lucignano and Singaluna charming and had all the amenities and services we needed. Wayne and I would love to return to Calcione in the future and bring our extended family to stay in one of your larger houses.

“Rustic, roomy and deliciously quiet”

“Il Calcione is wonderful!”
After the events of September 11th here in the United States, many of our friends and family were questioning our decision to go forward with our much-anticipated trip to Italy.
Read MoreBut my husband Eric and I both agreed that we did not want to let such senseless acts of violence rule our lives. We would certainly not be looking for trouble, but we were not going to alter our plans. We had been warned about longer waiting periods, lines and searches. We flew California to Chicago to Milan on September 26th and found the warnings to be true. However, we were comforted that these minor inconveniences made for a safer journey. Our American passports were received no differently than those of the Germans, British or Australians we met in our travels. We experienced no anti-American sentiment what so ever.
Eric and I travel to experience new cultures, food, music and ways of life. We do not expect an “American breakfast” or circumstances like we have at home. If that was what we wanted, we would have spent our vacation in San Francisco or New Orleans. We wanted Italy. And that, in all its glory, was what we got! Olivella, we loved your country with its warm and friendly people, beautiful sights and antiquities, romantic views and fabulous food and wine. Il Calcione is wonderful! The property itself is beautiful. Rolling fields, Olive trees, lush woods. Our visit was in the Fall and the trees were just beginning to turn color. Our apartment (Casa de Lecci) was roomy and had all the necessary amenities. (Although we did add a new, sharp knife to the kitchen utensils...). The pool looked wonderfully inviting, but as the weather was a bit chilly, we passed. Maybe we’ll come back when its swimming weather... We made good use of the fireplace - made the living room really cozy. Especially the Sunday that it rained so hard and we never left the house! Eric and I shared many a star-filled night and a glass of vino rosso on the balcony. What a beautiful view across the valley! The location was just right for our daily jaunts into the country - day-trips to Deruta for pottery and Assisi for inspiration. We visited Montepulciano and found wonderful Vino Nobile! (If you see a 1997, let us know!). Others we spoke to made trips to Venice, Rome and Florence. Our initial drive down from Florence took only an hour.
Your visitors should not miss the restaurants La Badessa in near-by Monte San Savino, nor L’Amorosa in near-by Sinalunga. Both had spectacular food. L’Amorosa was perfect for a romantic dinner with my husband for his birthday! Sinalunga, a quick 10 minute drive down the road, has a great grocery store with all the necessities.
Eric and I were very happy with our stay in Italy and particularly our stay at Il Calcione. We share your web-site with all who ask about our trip. We’re already plotting to return with several friends - Maybe San Giuseppe is in our future? Please feel free to share my e-mail address. I would love to share my impression and experiences of both Il Calcione and of Italy. My best to you and your family.

“Look no further”
We spent the first two weeks in September at La Casetta. We loved it! The setting is truly idyllic – the apartment is well proportioned, tastefully decorated, clean and perfectly placed.
Read MoreWhat a treat to wake up in the morning and watch the horses roaming through the olive groves while we sipped our coffee and planned our day.
We had sole use of the swimming pool – this, along with the fact that La Casetta has a private terrace, made it the perfect ‘getaway’ spot. Calcione was exactly what we were looking for – peace and quiet with places of interest easily accessible and good food nearby in the local villages. If you want somewhere to go where you can recharge your batteries, be as active or inactive as you want, and soak up true Tuscan atmosphere, then look no further. Olivella and her staff are kindness itself – attentive without being intrusive.
Five stars.

“Memorable vacation”
My Fiancé Mike and I recently had the pleasure of staying in your delightful La Casetta. The rooms were cozy and comfortable. The kitchen was well equipped with everything imaginable for cooking, and our private patio was a cool and comfortable refuge at the end of a long day of sightseeing.
Read MoreWhat a treat to wake up in the morning and watch the horses roaming through the olive groves while we sipped our coffee and planned our day. The information book that you placed in the apartment was extremely helpful with road directions and local history and events. We referred to it daily as we mapped out our days.
We completely fell in love with Lucignano, the food...the people....the quaint shops. Il Calcione is a perfect home base for touring the beautiful Hills of Tuscany. We managed to visit more places than we originally planned be cause of their proximity to Calcione. Arezzo for breakfast.... a picnic lunch in Cortona....and Bistecche Fiorentina at Ristorante da Forcillo in Sinalunga... Delightful!! We travelled to Perugia in the morning and on to Deruta for ceramics then back to La Casetta to relax before dinner. It was very easy to get used to the Tuscan lifestyle. “Magical wedding anniversary in Italy”
Thank-you for helping to make the 45 day celebration of our twentieth wedding anniversary in Italy magical. We spent a week in Tuscany at the romantic, perfectly sweet Casetta Villa on the grounds of Calcione Castle, and it made me feel I could live in Italy part-time.
Read MoreAlmost every day we would head out for a side trip (Sienna, Montepulciano, Assisi, Mount Oliveto Maggiore, the Prada facory, Cortona) and then go to Lucignano for dinner. One evening we had the castle cook prepare our dinner. I shall remember the horses and hills from the arched windows of the Casetta, reading in the sun by the pool. Your thoughtful inclusion on the kitchen shelves of plastic ware to pack a picnic lunch that could be sealed was appreciated. We hiked the castle grounds and found the tour of the church in the castle most interesting. To have your own 1,000 year old perfectly preserved Saint Joachim is not something that a lot of people who visit Italy get to see. “Truly a welcoming place”
Dear Olivella, It is hard to readjust after spending a week at Il Calcione. The week was a most relaxing vacation and a real “break” from our day to day lives.
Read MoreWe were made to feel right at home as soon as we arrived. You and your parents immediately arrived and, as we were the first guests to stay in La Casetta, we were very touched to be invited to join your family in drinking a toast to the new house. Our “Casetta” was truly a welcoming place. The house is spacious, comfortable and beautifully decorated. The kitchen is very well equipped and comfortable to use and we had a lot of fun shopping at the local market.
A few small details like some reading books and especially books of the area, some fresh wild flowers, a bottle of your own olive oil and the basket of teas, coffee and sweets made us feel very welcome and right at home.
Although we went out to visit various cities and towns each day, one of the highlights of our stay was coming “home” to la Casetta in the late afternoon or early evening. We loved just sitting on our porch before and after dinner, enjoying the beautiful view of the lake, the horses grazing in the olive groves and the incredible peace and quiet.
Il Calcione is a beautiful place. We had the feeling that we were in the middle of nowhere but it is actually very centrally located near all the main towns. However, it was the small little towns like Lucignano and Monte San Sanvino, only a few kilometers from the estate, that we enjoyed the most. We took long walks in the woods and to the lakes and very much enjoyed the sounds of nature and peacefulness.
The tour of the castle with your father was an unexpected treat -it was very interesting, especially the archives and the church. We would highly recommend Il Calcione to anyone looking for relaxing, quiet and private place in the eastern Tuscany area. We would be more than happy for our email address to be posted on your web site and answer questions from potential guests. Please give our best to your parents and your cousin who was so helpful to us. Casa della Pergola
“It was SO MUCH MORE than we had hoped for”
I don’t know what any of us expected when we rented a ‘villa’ on line, sight unseen. A computer can do wonders so we were all ready for anything... anything except what we saw when we arrived... it was SO MUCH MORE than we had hoped for. Truly, none of us wanted to leave and threatened Nicoletta with permanent residency!
Read MoreThe house was perfect and extremely comfortable, one could not ask for more. The kitchen was perfect and allowed us to fix a couple meals at home. We got up at our leisure, sipped coffee and enjoyed the morning at the villa, then left to explore. By doing so, we found that we ate our lunch later in the day and by nightfall were able to enjoy our meals at home. The house was so comfortable that we slept very soundly and felt very relaxed when we awoke the next day. We had initially planned on six of us, two to a room, but our group changed and ended up with only three of us, so we each enjoyed our own room and bathroom.
The grounds of the castle are fascinating and I can’t tell you how much we enjoyed it. We made an appointment with Nicoletta to tour the castle and I would say that that was certainly one of the highlights of our trip. We didn’t have a schedule during our stay in Tuscany but rather looked at the map each day and decided the direction we would travel... and if we arrived at our ‘destination’, great, if not, so be it. We stopped at any interesting sight and enjoyed the culture of the entire area.
Upon returning I purchased the Luxury Homes in Tuscana that Nicoletta shared with us and have encouraged anyone and everyone I speak with to go visit your castle. Truly amazing. It was a wonderful experience and probably the best vacation I have ever enjoyed.
Thank you so much for opening your house to us.
Sincerely,

“We are hoping to return next year”
We had a fabulous 2 weeks with you over the summer. The house was just right, great accommodation and outside space (we loved having the barbeque) and so nice to be just a few steps away from the pool and tennis court.
Read MoreWe got on very well with the family upstairs which was a huge bonus We had a magical day at the lake, which we wished we had discovered earlier, the children loved the thrill of jumping off the jetty and daring each other to swim from side to side. We love the general area and had great day trips to Rome, Arezzo, Cortona and across to Radda in Chianti where we have spent many holidays. We suddenly realised once we arrived there just how unspoilt and quiet your area is, many fewer tourists (like us!) and less cars on the road. We were so pleased to come back to Calcione! We are hoping to return next year.

“A gorgeous week”
Hi Olivella, My family has now arrived back in the States, and I wanted to say THANK YOU very, very much for our stay in Il Calcione. “Our stay was too short”
Our group had a wonderful time at Casa della Pergola. Our positive experience actually began with your website; it is so well done! We were welcomed graciously by Martino on our arrival day and appreciated his careful and detailed information.
Read MoreThe highlights were: to be able to hike and stroll freely on the extensive grounds, to come home to Amel’s wonderful dinners, and to explore Lucignano. Lucignano is a jewel; It has all the attractions of a Tuscan hilltown without any of the touristic atmosphere. We had beautiful Sunday lunch on the terrace of one of the restaurants there, whose name escapes me. (The one that you said had uneven service -- we must have caught them on a good day!) Our stay was too short and felt hectic, though. It was my husband’s first trip to Italy, and he felt like he couldn’t take a day “off” just to hang out, but had to get out and drive somewhere everyday. This made the stay feel “busy” and not as relaxing as we had hoped. (But that’s our fault, not yours!). A big highlight for my husband, who is Russian, was to visit the main square of a town that is featured in one of Tarkovsky’s most significant films “Nostalgia”. The story of being there never fails to impress, when told to another Russian. “Our stay could not have been better”
Our stay at the Casa della Pergola could not have been better. We loved the house, and it was absolutely perfect for our family. It not only made us feel we were part of Italy, the amenities were just right.
Read MoreThe house was cool and comfortable, the kitchen well appointed - complete with a washer which allowed to get ready for the other half of our trip; each of the kids had his/her own bathroom so there were no arguments; and the pergola was one of the most delightful places on earth. In fact, our visit with you under the pergola the day we left - when you regaled us with those wonderful, funny stories - was one of the highlights of our entire trip. Ever since, whenever we’ve seen a lizard, somebody always exclaims, “Watch out for the crocodile!” Our only complaint was that our stay at Calcione was entirely too short. The next time we are in Italy - which we hope will be soon - we intend to spend our entire time there. In the meantime, please stay in touch and do let us know whenever you come to the States. We’d love to return some of your lovely hospitality.

“Calcione was one of the best vacations we have ever had!”
Dear Olivella, even though it is nearly three months since our stay at La Pergola, the memories remain very vivid. As a family of five, including 3 teenage boys, it’s not always easy to find the right formula but we can say without exaggeration that Calcione was one of the best vacations we have ever had!
Read MoreThe absence of television is a boon and we all plunged into our books and revived the art of conversation over long meals seated under the Pergola. The sense of welcome and relaxation were instantaneous, and the house itself a joy. In spite of the blisteringly hot weather, we remained cool thanks to the thick stone walls and those beautiful vaulted brick ceilings which I have never witnessed before. It was a particularly poignant time for us as our eldest Nicholas was preparing to fly the nest to university, where he now is, and so we were also savouring our last few weeks together. Everything has been worked out to the last detail and the copious information provided made it easy for us to choose good restaurants and places to visit. Apart from the food, wine, oil, Tuscan scenery, Florence, Sienna and Martino’s daily chats, a particular highlight for me was being able to go riding with Spinella on Kinka, her beautiful chestnut ex-racehorse whose pin-up picture I am looking at as I write. What a horse and what a beautiful way to see the countryside. We cannot recommend Calcione more highly and if anyone would like further feedback, please feel free use us as a reference.

“I can’t wait to come back”
Dear Olivella, even though it is nearly three months since our stay at La Pergola, the memories remain very vivid. As a family of five, including 3 teenage boys, it’s not always easy to find the right formula but we can say without exaggeration that Calcione was one of the best vacations we have ever had!
Read MoreOur extended family had a wonderful vacation at Calcione. The setting is beautiful. I will never forget sitting under the pergola, seeing the lights of Lucignano twinkling on the hillside across the valley. Or watching the sun burn away ribbons of fog from the green and gold hills. Or the sound of the birds, especially the owl, whose gentle who-oo gave the night just a touch of mystery.
Despite feeling that we were deep in the country, it was a quick drive to several small towns, shops, and restaurants. We were centrally located, so we could make day trips to Siena, Perugia, Montepulciano, San Gimignano, among others.
The buildings at Calcione look as if they are illustrations for a 16th century fairy tale, but inside they are snug and have all the modern conveniences. Our cottage (Casa della Pergola) had a lovely fireplace, tile floors, coved ceilings, plus central heating and a dishwasher! I can’t wait to come back, and I look forward to staying in touch with you over the years. Please do encourage anyone interested to contact me for a glowing recommendation!

“We felt at home immediately!”
Dear Olivella, We are very enthusiastic about our stay in Calcione, we enjoyed it very much! First there was the cordial welcome at Casa della Pergola where Mrs Lotteringhi della Stufa waited for us, the fire burned, an enormous bouquet on the table, we felt at home immediately!
Read MoreCasa della Pergola: a nice house beautifully decorated, the large garden, the beautiful view, we enjoyed it all very much. We were very grateful that Mr. and Mrs. Lotteringhi della Stufa gave us a tour through the castle and the chapel, with “the dead guy”, and told us a lot about the history of the castle and the family. No need to tell about the beauty of Tuscany, that is known sufficiently I suppose. We limited our visits, apart from Sienna, to the country side and all those beautiful little towns, we admired the Madonna del Parto of Piero della Francesca in Monterchi, the S.Antimo abbey, Etruscan graves, a farm where olive oil was produced and wine etc.etc. Every day we made an excursion and beside that there was time to walk to the lake and through the woods surrounding the castle and enjoy the sun in our garden. You see, we had a wonderful time in Calcione, its a real nice place to stay and enjoy all Tuscany has to offer.

“We will be dreaming of Il Calcione for months to come and cannot wait to return”
Words really cannot express the absolute joy and sheer bliss we found during our recent stay at Casa dell’Alloro at Il Calcione in the month of October. This place is the perfect combination of old-world, rustic charm but with all the modern conveniences one needs.
Read MoreI had lived in Italy many years ago (Rome) and I wanted to treat my siblings and a friend to the wonders and magic of Italy, as they had never been. So I wanted to choose a special place. By chance, an artist friend of mine in New York informed me that she and some girlfriends had stayed at Il Calcione and had absolutely loved it. So I knew I was already on the right track, as personal recommendations are always best. We were not disappointed.
Every aspect of this place is truly special, from the unique setting - a centuries-old castle on a huge olive and wine-growing estate surrounded by restored and renovated former staff and family houses - to the bucolic location itself, to the cozy warmth of the houses (all different but all delightful), to the gracious, gentile aristocratic hospitality shown by Olivella and her lovely parents (who live in the castle) and even the family dog, Striscia! Il Calcione is not “faux-Tuscany”. It does not cater to or seek those looking for all the conveniences of modern hotel living with Tuscan decorations. It is a family estate, a working estate, and as a result Olivella has created something quite extraordinary - a place to enjoy the feeling that you are part of that life. However, being the wise cookie that Olivella is, she also realized that, as American travelers, we appreciate our little comforts, such as modern bathrooms, dishwashers and washing machines, the option of a beautiful pool to swim in (or the estate lake), screens on the bedrooms windows to keep out the few insects that might wander in, etc.
Some people have found the estate’s location somewhat out of the way, as you can’t walk into the nearest town, Lucignano (a delight, by the way). But I say you can’t have it both ways. It wouldn’t be as special as it is, as quiet as it is, without it being in its own little world. Besides, Lucignano is only 4-5 kilometers away, a short drive, and has everything you need in the way of shopping and wonderful small restaurants. You can even see it from the stunning terrace of Casa dell’Alloro. And oh, the estate’s wine (a mere 3 euros a bottle) and olive oil are superb. We will be dreaming of Il Calcione for months to come and cannot wait to return.

“The view from the terrace was fabulous”
We thoroughly enjoyed our week at Calcione staying in Casa dell’Alloro. Everyone one at the castle was extremely helpful with directions, use of phone or any other concerns. Casa dell’Alloro was well equipped and comfortable.

Casa dell'Alloro
“A feeling of history and beauty”
We found it very difficult to leave Calcione after a two week stay in early July. It is in a peaceful, beautiful setting. We stayed in a two bedroomed apartment, Alloro, which had lots of space for all of us (family of 4).
Read More It has a large terrace with spectacular views, where we spent a lot of our time - reading, sunbathing and enjoying delicious local produce - both food and wines. Both the accomodation and estate were full of character This is not pristine, modern accomodation and is not “twee” tuscany. The dominating characteristics are a feeling of history and the beauty and peaceful setting which surrounds you. The small lake is particularly beautiful and we also frequented the excellent estate swimming pool.
The services we received were excellent - babysitting for our two young children (some afternoons and evenings by a friendly and experienced english speaking young woman), cleaning services twice a week and an initial shopping so that we had basics for our arrival. The location is also very convenient for seeing much of Tuscany and Umbria, with a beautiful and friendly town of Lucignano nearby. Lucignano is excellent for restaurants, sourcing groceries and to sit back in one of the bars and enjoy watching the local life. It also has a beautiful setting and although quiet during the day, is nicely lively in the evening.
Really, the only problem we had was that it was such a wonderful and relaxing place to spend time, we didn’t get to tour half as much as we expected. We are already looking forward to our next visit!!

“Il Calcione was an inspiration and it’s memory will be with us forever”
Words cannot possibly describe the beauty and peace that are part of Il Calcione and its surroundings. Upon arrival our gracious hostess said “here you will relax”. This statement rang true throughout our stay at Il Calcione.
Read More We were fortunate enough to stay at two of the houses at Il Calcione - San Pietro and Fontegiannelli.
“Enjoy the real Tuscan experience”
Dear Olivella, Thanks for your hospitality and helpfulness in getting us settled in. Your mother and father were also delightful and very helpful. We had a lovely long chat with your mother on our last evening at Calcione.
Read More The apartment, la Casa dell’Alloro, was wonderful and very comfortable. The view from the terrace was unforgettable especially the afternoon we saw a hot air balloon hovering over Lucignano. This was so much the stereotypical Tuscan image with the hills and countryside laid out in front of us. The total blackout of Italy on our first night also added to the experience.
We really enjoyed our walks around the estate and especially down to the lake. It was so beautiful and added a lot to our Tuscan experience. The location of the estate is very central to places like Florence, Sienna and Perugia and the beautiful hilltop towns like Montelpulciano and San Gimignano. Lucignano is also a hidden jewel. It is one of our favourite places with its excellent restaurants and narrow streets. I am surprised it isn’t better known and publicized.
Our only real complaint was the distance from the town to the estate which was a little inconvenient. It would obviously be better if the town was in walking distance but this is only a minor complaint. However your directions on how to get to the estate were very clear and easy to follow. Apart from all this, thanks again for the opportunity to stay in your wonderful estate. It was a little respite from the hustle and bustle of our previous and post experiences in Rome, Vicenza and Santa Margherita. We really enjoyed it and would recommend it to any travellers who want the chance to chill out and relax and enjoy the real Tuscan experience.

“Yes, Italy is a truly romantic country”
Dear Olivella, Thank you for making our stay so very special. If the following is useful for those contemplating visiting Tuscany and your remarkable castle and country home, please feel free to quote from it.
Read More Anyone wishing to contact us for a recommendation should write to Sandra Landry at sblandry@rogers.ca. Our visit to your beautiful property was far too short, of course. We never did get the chance to go for walks and explore the lakes although seeing inside the castle was a special treat. You do realize it was reading about your country home that encouraged us to make our trip - short as it was? Thank you so much for providing the inspiration for us, for the first time, to see a country of such incredible beauty and historical importance and to be able to experience the immense warmth and hospitality of the Italian people.
The countryside is beautifully maintained, picture postcard perfect everywhere we went. Our focus was the wine of every region we visited so we experienced everything from the Barolo of the north to Vino Nobile from Montepulciano and the vast selection in between, usually with the guidance of some very knowledgeable folk who make wine their business. In restaurants, one must not hesitate to ask for the ‘house wines’ which are not always mentioned on the wine list although they are usually at least Chianti Classico and are frequently served by the bottle. A lot of the more prestigious labels are often available in 375ml sizes so that can help the budget a bit.
We found prices at the supermarkets most reasonable with food of high quality and most had amazing cheese and wine selections with prices that are one third of what you would pay in Toronto for the same (rarely found) or a similar product.
Yes, Italy is a truly romantic country. It appeals to one’s senses in a strong and most persuasive manner. In thirteen days we saw and experienced more than we could possibly have imagined. Yet we find ourselves longing for more and we just know we have to go back!

“A unique and truly wonderful vacation”
We had a wonderful stay at Calcione and are hoping to return there in a few years with our children and extended family. We very much enjoyed our cozy room and found it fun to shop in Lucignano and make meals at home. We also liked exploring the small towns in the area Assisi, Deruta, Siena, Cortona, and Montepulciano.
Read More We found wonderful pottery and wine and art and will enjoy these remembrances of our trip. We have many more places to see - we didn’t even come close to getting to all of the places on your list!

“Les meilleures vacances”
Alors, voici ce que nous avons pensé de notre séjour à la casa del Alloro:
la formule de location avec les services que vous offrez, l’office, les draps et les essuies chaque semaine, s’est révélée être la meilleure pour tout le monde, à savoir que celle-ci répondait, pour une fois, aux désidérata de tous:
Read More - la piscine, pour les enfants (et les parents);
- un logement suffisament spacieux, bien équipé et pratique pour y vivre et se détendre;

“Wonderful relaxing getaway”
Our family visited Calcione in the month of June. We stayed in Fontegiannelli in Casa Dell’Alloro. We were very pleased with beautifully furnished, cozy apartment which combines the charm of old ages with luxuries of modern world. We loved having breakfasts or lunches on the terrace outside.

“All and more that we could have wished for”
Add our name with pleasure as one of those who would be delighted to recommend Calcione as one of the delights of Tuscany and a home from home for visitors to your delightful region.
Read MoreI am delighted you have given me the opportunity to end the laziness that was the only thing that prevented me from writing long ago to tell you how much we enjoyed our stay at your lovely castle home.
We were guests in Casa dei Gelsi, which was all and more that we could have wished for. It was really a home from home: our swimming pool, elegantly furnished, deliciously cool, wonderful views, all the equipment we needed. What more can I say: it was heaven.
Your family were kindness itself to us. The castle itself is superbly situated for day trips to all the villages and towns of Tuscany and Umbria. We kicked ourselves afterwards for making our original booking with your for one week only and moving on to stay in Florence. With hindsight we should have stayed a full fortnight with you and made a couple of excursions into Florence from Calcione as it is less than a couple of hours away.
And when it is comes to the hilltop villages for which Tuscany is so famous, we decided we had the best hilltop village right on our doorstep - your own Lucignano just five miles away. It had all we needed in the way of shopping, restaurants and the shady bar where we spent many happy moments watching the old men play cards. We loved Lucignano. I would count it as a privilege to extoll the virtues and delights of Calcione to anyone you might like to refer to us.

“The villa was truly a welcoming place”
Our stay in Tuscany at La Fornace villa on the Calcione estate was absolutely wonderful. Not only did we have the peaceful and bucolic atmosphere of the villa, but also the convenience of making visits to some of Italy’s most renowned cities of culture and commerce.
Read MoreThe villa was truly a welcoming place. The living room could seat all eight of us comfortably surrounding a wonderful “walk-in” fireplace. In the kitchen we cooked meals of local meat, fish and produce which we procured at Lucignano, a walled town only ten minutes drive away. The dining room table fit us all amply. We purchased wine and olive oil produced on the estate for our meals. The bedrooms are beautifully decorated in authentic antiques and have comfortable beds. Most of all, the ambience of the countryside was enchanting. We took walks among the olive groves and grape vineyards and even swam in the local pond. A highlight was our authentic Tuscan meal prepared by a chef from Calcione. We even went along with her shopping in the local market. While the seclusion of the villa was most welcome, less than an hour’s drive away are the marvelous cities of Siena and Florence, centers of art and culture with beautiful architecture and some of the finest paintings in Italy. We received outstanding service while at Calcione. Olivella, her family and staff were always available to answer questions; help us with translations; provide suggestions on places to visit, shop and dine; and fulfill our needs for wood, wine, etc. I am glad to be listed as a reference for future potential guests. Thanks so much for a wonderful time.

La Fornace
“I still miss the tranquil life there, the lovely views, the food...”
My husband and I were living in Rome and went to Calcione to buy our first dog, an Italian Greyhound bred by the Marchese della Stufa. We had been thinking of leaving Rome and moving to the country nearby. We fell in love with Tuscany and with Calcione especially.
Read MoreWe rented La Fornace for 6 months to see how we liked the place and stayed there for 17 1/2 years! The Tuscan countryside is beautiful but that at Calcione is the most beautiful of all with the rolling hills, fields, woods, olive groves, vineyards and medieval villages perched atop hills. It is exactly like the background of a Raffaello painting. The location is the best because the site is in the middle of this pristine countryside yet only 10 minutes from the autostrada whence one can go anywhere in Italy. It is near Florence, Siena, Arezzo, the Chianti wine growing area, and Assisi, Perugia, Spoleto, Gubbio in Umbria., and Rome is only 2 hours away, Venice 3, and Pisa and the Mediterannean 2 1/2.
The 17th century farmhouses are charming, yet they are very comfortable to live in. We particularly liked La Fornace because it is slightly isolated and only a stone’s throw away from the small lake where we used to have picnics and spend many hours during the summer. I still miss the tranquil life there, the lovely views, the food (I have never had tastier beef, pork, or chicken), the fresh-from-the-farm vegetables, the tree-ripened fruit, the olive oil, the wine, all of which one can get 5 minutes away at three nearby villages - Lucignano, Sinalunga or Monte San Savino. It is truly a memorable experience to live in any one of the old farmhouses at Calcione. I feel so very lucky to have lived there for such a long time, but to spend even 2 weeks there would be special.

“My days there are always magical”
I would be delighted to be a reference for anyone interested in La Fornace or Il Calcione in general. My days there are always magical. The road down from the castle has become so familiar to me that when I drive it for the first time I feel like I did as a child when I saw my family’s summer home for the first time after a long winter, at home.
Read MoreThe quiet at La Fornace is incredible - I catch up on my sleep and read and cook and eat. I love to have a big fire in the open fireplace or sit outside and have dinner by candlelight. Long walks around Il Calcione in the early autumn can be brisk or delightfully warm. I can close my eyes and picture the castle in the distance or the town of Lucignano, so royal on its hilltop.

Read MoreWe found Calcione the perfect location for easy access to Cortona, Arezzo, Montepulciano, Siena and Florence for day trips of sightseeing and visiting museums. And we loved Lucignano. La Fornace was particularly suited to our group of 6. It allowed us to prepare our own breakfasts and dinners with wonderful products of Tuscany, have spacious rooms for reading and relaxing and the special benefit of the private lake for swimming. John swam every afternoon. Amel prepared a fabulous dinner for us; we wish we could have engaged her for more. “A perfect place for our group”
We stayed at La Fornace the first week in April. It was a perfect place for our group which consisted of our daughter, her husband, their three children ages 2 ½, 5, and 6 ½, my husband, and me.
Read MoreNannie and Papa (us) had our own bedroom and bathroom on the ground level. Our daughter and her husband had one bedroom, the two older children another, and the baby the third. They shared two bathrooms. The bedroom wing upstairs is across the living room from the dining room and kitchen, so if we were eating later, the children weren’t bothered by happy sounds coming from the dining room. The dining room table could seat 10 comfortably, so was very spacious for the 7 of us. The kitchen is small, but does have a dish washer. The house is about 1 mile from the castle, and is in a world of its own in the middle of the vineyards. There was no worry about the children being in danger from any traffic, and they loved playing in the courtyard.
Our biggest luxury was having Amel come to cook for us several times.
She is wonderful! We loved everything she made for us, and it was so convenient to eat “at home” with the children.

San Giuseppe

San Giuseppe
“All of us will vouch that Calcione is far better than portrayed”
Dear Olivella, I can’t adequately describe in words how wonderful our trip to Calcione was. We spent two weeks in the San Giuseppe Villa. We were a group of 10 adults and it was our first trip to Italy. I found the Calcione site on the internet early in our planning stage.
Read MoreWe all agreed that it looked just like what we were hoping for. However, as you know, things often times are not nearly as good in reality as they are on websites or magazines, etc. All of us will vouch that Calcione is far better than portrayed. It is centrally located for you to take day trips to a different destination every day if you choose too, but yet you have your own little bit of “Tuscany” all to yourself No traffic noise, sirens blaring, or other irritating city disrupting noises. The San Giuseppe house was like being on our own estate, even though there are several other homes and the Castle on the property. But, with over 2,000 acres of Calcione property, you are totally by yourselves which we loved. The grounds were beautiful and rustic, lots of olive trees, horses, cows, and our own flock of pheasants. Because all of us live in cities, we were enthralled with the country life and loved the serenity and natural beauty. Whether we were lounging around by the pool or sitting around the wonderful big table with bench’s in the kitchen (our favorite spot every morning for coffee and planning our day), we were never cramped for space. The house is very big (we all guessed at around 5000 sq ft) and just what we pictured for an Italian Villa. It’s originally very old but has been remodeled with all the modern conveniences. Except in Italy, the dishwashers and clothes washers and dryers are not nearly as efficient as ours, but that just made it more fun to experience. None of us wanted everything to be “just like home” anyway. We made side trips to Siena, Cortona, Chianti, Pienza, Montepulciano, Deruta, Florence, Lucignano, Sinalunga, and others. We would try to visit a town on the day of their local open air market which was so much fun. We were always back home though by 4 to 5 PM. Our very first night, we had arranged to have Amel come and cook for us. It was so incredible and delicious that we hired her many more times during our stay as no restaurant food quite compared to her cooking even with the highest recommendations. After cooking our dinner she always spotlessly cleaned everything up (and believe me, she uses every pan, dish and spoon). She gave us mini cooking classes and let us watch as she made pasta from scratch (not even a pasta machine). Dinner was a three hour, 5 course event around the two big tables in the dining room. Be sure and try her lasagna. No other lasagna will ever taste as good as hers. All 10 of us agree that our stay at Calcione was one of the very best vacations any of us have ever experienced and all of us have been many many places throughout the world. My husbands only regret was that we didn’t spend more time at our Calcione Villa rather than running around visiting all the local sites.
One final note: We had originally planned on spending two days in Florence (staying one night in a hotel) as we thought it was probably too far to do a day trip. But it isn’t. We had arranged for a private tour and we had plenty of time to see everything that we wanted to including the Uffizi, the Accademia., and a leisurely lunch. We were still back “home” by 7PM.
Please feel free to use our comments on your website. Thank you so much for preserving your family’s history of “Calcione”. You have done a wonderful job. That reminds me: Chiara (one of your staff) gave us a fabulous tour of the castle and the chapel. Anyone staying at Calcione should request a tour. They will be amazed. Obviously it’s not open to the public, but it could be. The chapel and archive room in the castle are as good as visiting many of the churches in the local towns and villages.

San Giuseppe
“The most special place in the world”
As always, the time spent at Calcione exceeded my expectations. How is this possible after my sixth visit?
Read MoreIt was especially wonderful to fulfill a dream of traveling with friends and family to stay at San Giuseppe. It was terrific for all 17 of us to spend time together when we wanted to – but have time alone, too. San Giuseppe makes that so possible the house is so comfortable (and big) and offers so much privacy. The proof is that when we all left the house – we all said we wished we could have more time together!
We all agree that we miss the deafening quiet of San Giuseppe, coming back from our treks for the day to hang out at the pool and eat dinner at the big round table under the moonlight. Some of my friends thought I was exaggerating when I told them about the supermarket in Sinalunga. Now they understand how I can carry on about the bread and fresh vegetables and cheese from a supermarket half way around the world. One of the travelers from here in NYC sent an email and said that she’d walked around the corner for espresso the morning after she got home from Italy but would rather be driving to Lucingano for her caffeine at 7AM. Who wouldn’t?! I told her that if I could click my heels and be back in Lucignano for pasta and truffles, I’d be gone.
I know I’ve told you this before but you’ve created the most special place in the world. It’s hard work to keep everything so pristine and to respond to the many demands of your guests - but this was a most memorable gathering we’ve ever had. We are all grateful.
It was fun to meet the other guests the day before we left at the castle. I was happy to share some of the information I’ve gathered the past six years visiting Tuscany. If you have inquiries from anyone in the U.S. about Calcione, please feel free to have them contact me. Thank you again Olivella.
My best to all.

“Enjoy an easy life”
Dear Olivella , We indeed did enjoy our stay very much. Especially the great villa San Giuseppe was a real home for us, for our children and our family.
The quietness of the location, unique in its own setting was very relaxing. The view on the lakes, driving through the area with horses and cows was great, what we called “life alla Toscana”.
Read MoreThe renovation of the villa had been done in a superb way, protecting the real character of the house. Adding a luxury feeling with all the necessities of the modern world. We enjoyed also the kitchen very much in its antique setting, not in the last place having Rosa to cook a real Italian meal for us. We are still talking about her Panna Cotta dessert. She launched a real contest in cooking for everybody else, with all kind of real Italian ingredients. The swimming pool and garden with a lot of very comfortable chairs and quiet places gave room for each to enjoy an easy life with a lot of reading and discussions. “A most delightful stay”
Our Seattle group had a most delightful stay at San Giuseppe and Casa dell’Alloro set in the beautiful Tuscan countryside of Calcione.
We were a group of 19 and each couple had his own lovely bedroom and bathroom, an unusual accommodation for any villa. We found the lovely villa of San Giuseppe just perfect for our large group as we could all gather in the dining room to enjoy the Italian cook Amel’s simply divine home-cooked meals.
Read MoreAmel was a fabulous cook, making everything from scratch using the area’s finest ingredients in serving delicious pizza, lasagne, veal scallopini, baked chicken, and Tiramisu to name but a few of her specialities. We enjoyed most of our dinners in the villa, thanks to Amel’s fine culinary talents. We brought our American Compact Discs and danced to the wee hours using Olivella’s CD player.
The villa San Giuseppe, which is set amidst the picturesque Tuscan countryside with horses grazing happily on the property, has spacious rooms which are decorated with antiques. The modern conveniences of washing machine and dryer along with ovens and dishwasher serve to make the villa all the more enjoyable. Our group visited Calcione during the month of October, and when we first arrived we enjoyed sharing conversation and wine on the lawn overlooking the swimming pool, an amenity which each villa possesses. Olivella della Stufa, the managing owner of the Calcione properties, is a warm and engaging conversationalist who is eager to please her guests. Olivella is a charming person whose presence added an uniquely warm touch to our stay.
We would not hesitate to recommend the villas at San Giuseppe or Casa dell’Alloro to anyone who wishes to create fond memories. My husband and I look forward to the day when we again return to Calcione and continue where we left off... having more fun and creating more memorable experiences.

Her meals are a treat beyond belief and she is delightful person to be around in the kitchen. We were trying to learn her secrets. We enjoyed the wine of the estate, perhaps a little too much, and came home with as much olive oil and the castle could spare. Martino, who oversees the estate, was so helpful with cars, transportation, dinner reservations directions, what ever we needed. Our week at Calcione was magical. Deborah Durrett

“We couldn’t have dreamed a better place”
This is a belated thank you for the wonderful opportunity to stay at Calcione this summer. We could not have dreamed a better place for our three families to experience a Tuscan vacation. We loved everything about San Giuseppe.
Read MoreWe especially loved being able to hire Amel to cook. Her meals were superb and she was such and warm and wonderful person. Our teenage girls also had fun meeting her son and his friends and had a wonderful “cultural exchange” with them in Lucignano. Everything was perfect for a great holiday in Tuscany!! What a wonderful estate you have and we so appreciated being able call it home for a perfect week. Thank you very much.

“To experience Tuscany in any other way than the ‘Calcione Way”’would be missing the heart and soul of Tuscany”
My stay at Calcione was a most memorable experience and one I plan to repeat. In October, I came with 18 others to stay at Calcione. Most of us stayed at the largest of the villas, San Giuseppe. It was an amazing experience.
Read MoreThe bedrooms were large and very comfortable, each with a private bathroom. The entire villa was charmingly decorated to give one a true feel of the real Tuscany. The kitchen was our meeting place in the morning and was equipped with every modern convenience: microwave, toaster, coffee maker, dishwasher, etc.
It seemed as if the location of Calcione was close to all the Tuscan hill towns, which we visited during the day. When we returned to San Giuseppe in the evening, the cook would be making the most fabulous meals from scratch. There was a CD player, and as we relaxed over cocktails before dinner, we listened to the CD’s we had brought with us and discussed everything under the “Tuscan” sun. My time at Calcione creating memories with friends and family was enhanced by the thoughtfulness that the owner, Olivella della Stufa, put into every detail to make our stay one of the most enjoyable vacations I have ever experienced. To experience Tuscany in any other way than the “Calcione Way” would be missing the heart and soul of Tuscany.
Thank you Olivella,
Sincerely,

“Everything was perfetto”
Dear Olivella,
We have been back from Tuscany and Il Calcione for two weeks now, and it still is so fresh in our memory! We had a large group at San Giuseppe. The house was spacious yet cozy. There were 11 of us in total, and still had plenty of room.
Read MoreIl Calcione is so well located to all major and minor roads so we could travel all over Tuscany. We felt like Italians on vacation instead of American tourists. The grounds were beautiful. Everything was perfetto and we fell in love with Italy. Amel was cooking for us for several nights and that was a real treat. She’s a very talented cook! Two of us would like to see what you have available in a small apartment for a few weeks next July. Hopefully, I will master my Italian lessons so I can try to speak like a native! You can post my email address if anyone would like to contact us! Ciao!

“How sad to say goodbye to your beautiful Il Calcione”
Our group of 11 had a wonderful time staying at San Giuseppe. The house was perfect with plenty of room and privacy for such a large group of friends. The grounds of the estate are just beautiful - we took lots of walks on the property and explored the fields, vineyards, lakes etc.
Read MoreI even managed to get pictures of the cinghiales at dusk as they were moving across the fields.  One of the highlights of our visit was meeting your father and seeing some of the castle. He is incredibly charming and obviously so proud of Il Calcione’s long history in the Della Stufa family. The artifacts in the castle are amazing - especially to Americans whose history is so young. Many of us cannot trace our family back before 1900. It was a truly wonderful experience. Please thank him on behalf of our group for allowing us a glimpse into your family history. Amel cooked for us three nights and she is terrific. Our meals were great and it was a pleasure for us all to eat together in the dining room after a long day of sightseeing. She is a real treasure!
How sad we all were to say goodbye to your beautiful Il Calcione. It took all week, but I finally figured out the timing of the gate so that I didn’t have to stop in the middle of the hill and stall the car! We hope to return some day. We will recommend the property to our friends and travel agents here in the States. On behalf of my group of 11 dear friends, I wish the Della Stufa Family a wonderful year. Many thanks,

“The location was super”
Two couples, myself, and four children (ages 5-17) stayed at Calcione the first week of the month of April. We had a wonderful time. Olivella and her family were very warm and friendly and they property reflected their personalities.
Read MoreThe location in central Tuscany was super. We made day trips to several cities from the Castle area including Florence and Pisa (Pisa was a long day). In addition, we made daily mountain bike trips right from the house. There are some great restaurants in the area also. We stocked up at the local bakeries for breakfast at the house. Feel free to contact me if you would like additional information.

“San Giuseppe met our needs in more ways than we could imagine”
We were a group of 11 people (6 of whom have known each other since childhood, and 5 spouses), and we chose to celebrate an important birthday in Tuscany.
Read MoreOne of the group did all the work and found San Giuseppe which met our needs in more ways than we could imagine. It was charming, comfortable, and had a wonderful atmosphere.
The property was special with olive trees, horses, cows, and even “cinghiale”. Arrangements were made to have Amel cook for us a couple evenings, but we found the dinners so wonderful and the dining room so accommodating, we had her cook 2 additional dinners. The meals included broccoli risotto, gnocchi, mixed grill fish (cooked right on the open hearth in the kitchen) as well as tiramisu and torta della nonna. Christina took great care of us. The location was excellent. We were able to easily visit Pienza, Orvieto, Siena, Arezzo, Monte San Savino, Lucignano, Florence. We also had a wonderful day trip to the Banfi winery for a delicious lunch and tasting. We enjoyed our tour by Giorgio, and the bus was very a delightful way to see the beautiful countryside and not worry about driving. We had a great visit, and please feel free to contact me for more information:

“... and the FOOD! It was really like a dream”
I hope you and your lovely family know just how totally delightful our time was at Calcione. It was absolutely gorgeous. The house, the pool, the horses, those fabulous olive trees and vineyards surrounding. And the FOOD! It was really like a dream.

Peter and I would love to visit with you or any of your family should they make it to New York. its fun here in a different way. We hope to see you here. But we will always remember that summer in Calcione.

San Giuseppe
“For those wanting to experience ‘real’ Tuscany”
My family stayed there in 1999 - at the time we were living in New York and my extended family joined us from Australia for 2 weeks.
Read MoreI had spent almost 30 hours on the internet trying to find a suitable property for our “large family”. For us, a truly Tuscan experience meant finding a villa in a rural area that would allow access to all the wonderful villages and cities I’d visited 10 years earlier. Also, we were not looking for the “ Frances Mayes “ experience - preferring instead to find a place owned and inhabited by Italians, which would have that quintessentially Italian ambience. I’d spoken to several people who had rented villas over the internet and most had disappointing tales to tell so it was with some fear and trepidation that I committed to San Giuseppe.
However, on arrival there we were struck immediately not only by the beauty of San Giuseppe, but also the surrounding Tuscan countryside. The Villa is spacious and very comfortable - filled with beautiful, elegant furniture. However, it retains its rustic charm and warmth throughout. It is first and foremost a family home and its as though the owners have just stepped out for a moment, leaving you to enjoy what they have created, first-hand. With two small children, we were able to have our own space and the other adults in the villa were able to enjoy peace and quiet!
For those wanting to experience “real” Tuscany - where there are more Tuscans than tourists, where you can eat olive oil and wine made from the surrounding groves and vines on the property, then Il Calcione is difficult to beat. It is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience - having said that, we are already planning a return! I will be more than happy to reply to any enquiries about San Giuseppe or Il Calcione.
